      Civic Works is a longstanding Baltimore City non-profit with a 25+ year track record of success. Our Center for Sustainable Careers provides construction companies in Maryland with highly-trained, highly-skilled workers. Our industry training tracks include: solar installation, energy retrofit installation, and utility infrastructure. Over time, we’ve developed a reputation for world-class training and graduates that perform at the highest level. Over 1000 Baltimore residents have graduated from Civic Works’ job training programs and over 85% of program graduates secure job placements, with an average starting wage of $18.

      Consistent Pool of Pre-Screened Job Candidates

      Civic Works’ community outreach team leverages the power of its expansive referral network, word-of-mouth, and community-based marketing to reach candidates across the Baltimore area. As a trusted messenger with a strong track record, Civic Works is able to build trust in the benefits of building a career and a trade.  Our program is also built to continually assess trainee commitment and aptitude through a multi-step screening process, including an information session, written application, urinalysis drug screening, hands-on skills test, and several interviews.

      Professional Hands-on & Personal Development Trainings

      Our program instructors and trainers are accredited professionals in their fields. Our roofing curriculum and hands-on lab modules are crafted with input and feedback from actual roofing employers and industry professionals. Additionally, all job candidates work one-on-one with a social worker and job readiness coach throughout the program to eliminate personal barriers to employment and ensure attendance and punctuality.

      Our Programs

      Brownfields Training

      We employ the expertise of accredited environmental professionals to deliver environmental health and safety training.  Students engage in a rigorous five-week curriculum that results in industry-recognized certifications.  Some of the Certifications include:

      • EPA AHERA Supervisor (40 hrs.)
      • OSHA 40 hr HAZWOPER
      • MD Lead Abatement Worker (16 hrs.)
      • OSHA Confined Space Operations

      In addition, students receive non-certification instruction in Phase I and Phase II environmental site assessments and ecology, including an in field practicum on soil and water sampling techniques.

      Solar Installer Training

      During their first month of training, individuals enrolled in our Solar Installer Training will receive the OSHA Construction Safety (30 hrs) Certification training, as well as basic math and science instruction.

      Our students are also required to obtain 88 hours of hands-on solar panel installation and electrical skill training. Our graduates gain further expertise in installing and wiring solar panels through two months of on-the-job training.

      Roofing Installer Training

      Civic Works’ Center for Sustainable Careers plans to launch a roofing pre-apprenticeship job training program in early Spring 2023 with the goal of creating a pipeline of highly trained and skilled program graduates to local employers. Our approximately two month course will include:

      • Professional development (2-3 weeks)
      • OSHA 30, including harness and ladder safety, signaling, and rigging (1 week)
      • Hands-on EPDM Training (2-3 weeks)
        • Curb Flashing
        • Pipe Wraps
        • Parapet Walls
        • Scuppers
        • Inside/Outside Corners
        • Other Details
      • On the job training (2-3 weeks)

      Energy Retrofit Installer Training

      During their first month of training, individuals enrolled in our Energy Retrofit Installer Training will receive the following Certifications:

      • 35-hour Weatherization Tactics Course certified by the Department of Energy
      • One day EPA Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) training course
      • OSHA Construction Safety (30 hrs.)

      Our students are also required to obtain 32 hours of customer service and 56 hours of hands-on skill trainings. Our graduates gain expertise in making whole house energy improvements through two months of on-the-job training.
